My story

From Street Cricketer to International Coach:

A Journey Fuelled by Resilience and Belief

My journey in cricket didn’t begin with grand stadiums or elite training programs it began on the humble streets of a nearby suburb of Colombo, Sri Lanka. Like many kids in my neighbourhood, I fell in love with the game playing barefoot with makeshift gear. But unlike most, I dared to dream beyond those dusty alleys.

Despite my passion, I faced early setbacks. I couldn’t break into the first XI of my alma mater a crushing blow in a cricket-obsessed nation. But rather than let that define me, I used it as fuel. My resilience was forged in rejection. My self-belief, tested in silence. And my determination, sharpened by every closed door.

Against all odds, I became the first and only player to date from playing 2nd XI in my school to represent Sri Lanka at the U19 level. That moment was more than just a selection it was proof that your past does not dictate your future. From there, I went on to wear the national cap in 26 Test matches and 35 One Day Internationals, while consistently dominating Sri Lanka’s first-class circuit and leading my domestic team to major trophies.

In the final chapter of my playing career, I embraced a new challenge: player-coach. It didn’t take long to make an impact—winning a major trophy in just my second year of coaching. That success was a turning point. I knew my calling had shifted from personal accolades to helping others reach their potential.

The transition to full-time coaching came naturally. I started with the UAE national team, then returned home to work with Sri Lanka A and the Sri Lanka national team, where I contributed to the development of many future stars. Coaching, for me, was never about control it was about connection, empowerment, and creating an environment where talent could thrive.

In 2010, I took another leap migrating to Australia. Within a short span, I found myself part of the coaching staff at Cricket New South Wales, arguably the most successful domestic cricket system in the world. As an assistant and batting coach, I was privileged to work alongside and help shape the next wave of Australian talent and some went on to become world elite.

A milestone I hold close to my heart is becoming the first Asian heritage head coach of both the NSW Blues and Sydney Thunder in the Sheffield Shield and Big Bash League. It was more than a personal achievement it was a statement about breaking barriers, opening doors, and leading with authenticity in spaces where representation was scarce.

Internationally, my coaching journey continued with distinction. I had the honour of coaching both Bangladesh and Sri Lanka national teams, combining for over eight years of unprecedented success, contributing to some of the most celebrated moments in their cricketing histories. I’ve also had the privilege of coaching in 10 ICC global events and over 150 international matches across Test, ODI, and T20 formats.

But it hasn’t always been smooth. I’ve been sacked twice from national coaching roles not due to performance or lack of results, but because of political changes beyond my control. Each time, I had a choice: to break down, or to stand tall. I chose the latter. I refused to compromise my personal values or professional integrity. And in doing so, I stayed true to the very principles that built my career resilience, self-belief, and unwavering determination.

Looking back, my journey is not one of linear success, but of relentless resilience. I was never the most naturally gifted or the most celebrated. But I believed when others didn’t, when things didn’t go my way, and when the road seemed closed. I believed in the power of persistence.

Resilience. Self-belief. Determination. These aren’t just words they are the cornerstones of my career, both as a player and as a coach. And they are the qualities I now strive to instill in every player I work with.

Because if a kid who couldn’t make his school’s first XI can go on to play and coach at the highest levels of international cricket then anything is possible.
